Solution Unbalanced equation is : CO + O2 =CO2 In balanced equation number of carbon atoms from each side of equation should be equal, and number of oxygen from each side of equation should be equal. We can see 1 atom of C before equal sign and 1 atom of C after equal sign. These numbers of carbon atoms are equal. We can see three oxygen atoms before equal sign and two atoms of oxygen after equal sign. These numbers are not equal. We should put a coefficient 2 before CO and also coefficient 2 before CO2: 2CO+O2 =2CO2 The numbers of oxygen are equal: 21+12 =24; 4=4; The numbers of carbon are equal: 21 =21; 2=2. Answer: 2CO+O2 =2CO2
