The duplet rule is a tendency for higher stability of completely occupied 1s shell e.g. hydrogen, helium, lithium are more stable with two electrons on a 1s shell. Thus, Li+ is more stable than a neutral Lithium itself. Another good example is a Helium atom, which possesses an extremely stable shell (because of a completely occupied 1s shell). H2 is also more stable than H atom itself.
