How would living things be affected if ice were more dense than liquid water?

If ice was denser than water then maybe we've had no poles. There would just be water on the poles. That's means no mammoths, no polar bears, and no birds that live on polar caps. So a major part of evolution's work would be missing. This also means that the ice would sink as soon as it forms and so global warming would have no effect on ice caps as they lay deep below the water surface.

Just imagine how you'd no longer be able to enjoy ice skating!
