Refer to the phase diagram of water and carbon dioxide..
1. What phase of water exists at 100°C and 5 atm?
2. What is the critical point for CO2 and water?
3. What phase of CO2 exists T-120°C? At 80°C and 100 atm?
Answer – 1) Liquid is the phase of water exists at 100°C and 5 atm since at 1 atm and 100oC the water boiling point. As the pressure increase boiling point also increase, hence at 100°C and 5 atm water is in liquid state.
2) The critical point for CO2 is 31.1oC and 73.03 atm and the critical point for water is 3174oC and 217.12 atm.
3) The CO2 phase at T-120°C is solid and at 80°C and 100 atm the CO2 is in supercritical phase.
