Fossil fuels contain sulfur in their compound, which can be oxidized to form sulfur dioxide while burning:Sufur + Oxygen --> Sulfur dioxide(or)S+O2--> SO2SO2 is a harmful and highly reactive gas, which can react with atmospheric water and may cause acid rain.
SO2 can react with other compounds in the atmosphere to form small particles. These particles contribute to particulate matter pollution. Small particles may penetrate deeply into the lungs and in sufficient quantity can contribute to health problems
