A 100 cm³ gas cylinder filled with chlorine under 160 torr pressure is connected by stop cock with another cylinder of 400cm³ filled with nitrogen under pressure of 200 torr. What will be the total pressure when stop cock is opened.

Calculate the pressure of each gas as it expands into the total new volume:


P1V1 = P2V2


Chlorine:

160 torr X 100 cm^3 = P2 X 500 cm^3

P2 = 32 tirr


Nitrogen:

200 torr X 400 cm^3 = P2 X 500 cm^3

P2 = 160 torr


The total pressure will be the sum of those two partial pressures, to, the total pressure is

P = 160 torr + 32 torr = 192 torr
