0.2 g of potassium sulfate is dissolved in water to make 800 g of solution. What is the concentration of the salt in ppm?
Solution:
Parts Per Million (ppm) is a measurement of the concentration of dilute solution.
In weight/weight (w/w) terms 1 ppm = 1 mg solute / 1 kg solution.
Convert the mass of the solute in grams to a mass in milligrams:
0.2 gram of K2SO4 * 1000 mg = 200 mg of K2SO4
Convert the mass of the solution in grams to a mass in kilograms:
800 g of solution / 1000 = 0.8 kg of solution
ppm = 200mg / 0.8 kg = 250 ppm
Answer: Concentration of K2SO4 in the solution 250 ppm.
