The addition of energy to matter leads to a physical change - matter moves from one state to another. For example, adding heat energy-heat-to liquid water causes it to become steam or gas. Energy extraction also leads to physical changes, such as when liquid water becomes ice - solid - when heat is removed.The temperature of course changes, from 0 degrees for ice to 15 degrees of heat when heat energy is added to the ice
