Answer to Question #133157 in General Chemistry for mike

Question #133157
If a skin diver takes a breath at the surface, filling his lungs with 5.82L of air, what volume will the air in his lungs occupy when he dives to a depth where the pressure is 1.92atm. (Assume constant temperature and that the pressure at the surface is exactly 1.00atm.)

Pressure1XVolume1=Pressure2XVolume2

Pressure 1= 1.000 atm

Volume 1 = 5.82 L

Pressure 2 = 1.92 atm.

Therefore, Volume 2= (Pressure1X Volume1)/pressure 2.

=(1.000X 5.82)/1.92

= 3.03125L.

Therefore, the answer is 3.03125 L.
