A nonpolar substance like mineral oil does not dissolve a polar substance like sucrose. It precipitates without change.

Most acids do not dissolve in oil because the two types of substances differ chemically. When mixed, the two form two separate layers as water and oil does.

Potassium iodode in oil precipitates.

If a substance dissolves it forms homogeneous mixture, it cannot be visibly distinguished from the solvent.
