Aerobic organisms use oxygen at the final step of the cellular respiration. As a result, these organisms break down biochemical substances to CO2 and H2O with the release of large amounts of energy. For example, during the process of aerobic respiration, 38 molecules of ATP can be produced from one glucose molecule whereas only 4 molecules of ATP are produced from glucose during anaerobic respiration. Produced ATP is used further in various metabolic processes that depend on energy stored in ATP.
