Numerous processes take place during the interphase. The cell grows and duplicates its organelles, which requires energy. In addition, during the S stage of interphase, the cell replicates its DNA, which is an energy-consuming process. Besides, interphase is the only stage, when the cell can perform its functions. Therefore, it cannot be considered as a rest stage, which would not be characterized by high energy demands.
