Gemmules are internal buds which are formed by sponges. They are formed by amoebocytes which are surrounded by a layer of spicules. Their function is similar to the function of endospores in bacteria. Gemmules form under the unfavorable conditions and can survive under them. When conditions become favorable gemmules provide asexual reproduction.
