The influence of peers among adolescents motivates the initiation of substance use. These adolescents experience prodromal symptoms of mental illness like social problems and cognitive. The quest for a better life and negative consequences are the motivators to substance use. The short-term considerations in individuals having co-occurring SUD and SMI typically motivate substance use. For an individual who may suffer cognitive impairments for long-term causal considerations may not be recognized.
