Question #108553

Instructions for making proteins found in the nucleus

Expert's answer

In the cell, proteins that are located in the nucleus are synthesized on free cytoplasmic ribosomes. The nuclear proteins contain specific amino acid sequence - nuclear localization signals that are recognized by nuclear transporters - importins, that interact with nuclear localization signals, as well as components of the nuclear pore. As a result, importins direct proteins containing nuclear localization signal into the cell nucleus.
