Critically discuss the value of IKS and why it should be included in the teaching of sciences.
Indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) comprises knowledge developed within indigenous societies, independent of, and prior to, the advent of the modern scientific knowledge system (MSKS).
IKS plays a profound role in societies. It helps shape and defines their very existence and provides the foundation for their beliefs and traditional practices. Indigenous knowledge provides the basis for problem-solving strategies for local communities, especially the poor.
Natural science and technology, in particular, have assumed a definite culture of power, which has marginalized the majority of learners in the past. IKS strategically wishes to transform this view and therefore holds valuable implications for educators in the learning areas of natural science and technology.
