To determine the age of fossils there are two main methods which are used by the scientists. These methods include;
1) Relative dating
2) Absolute dating
1) Relative dating
Relative dating involves comparing the fossil to something for which an age is already known. Certain types of fossils known as index fossil are used to assist in relative dating through correlation. These fossils are are known to occur within a specific age range.
2) Absolute dating
This method is used to determine a precise age of a rock or fossil through radiometric dating methods. It uses radioactive minerals that occur in rocks and fossils almost like a geological clock. It is easier to date volcanic rocks than the fossils themselves or the sedimentary rocks they are found in.
