Hexxus draws his power from environmental pollutants like smoke. Therefore, through pollution, Hexxus is strengthened and emboldened to destroy the Fern Gulley. On his release by cutting down the tree imprisoning him, Hexxus regains his power by connecting to the leveller to feed on the smoke from the exhaust.

The leveller represents the industries releasing greenhouse gases while Hexxus represents global warming. The architects of this pollution are humans who released Hexxus from his prison with a leveller. More industries translate to more pollution, which increases the global temperatures, which, if it continues unchecked, will finally destroy the environment. By destroying the leveller, the fairies cut off power from Hexxus and thus saved the Fern Gully from mass destruction. In the same sense, environmental conservation starts with cutting off the greenhouse gases that would help reduce global warming and thus save flora and fauna from imminent destruction.
