The animal kingdom is the largest with more than two million species known by biologists. The kingdom contains seven phyla:
Porifera. The phylum comprises mainly sea sponges, which are marine animals of saltwater.
Cnidaria. The members of this phylum are tall, and with medusae tendrils, they include the corals, box jellyfish, and anemones.
Platyhelminthes. The phylum comprises flatworms, which include the flukes, flatworms, and planarians.
Annelida. The member of this phylum is the segmented worms, which include the marine worms, earthworms and also leeches.
Mollusca. The members belonging to this phylum have their body covered with an exoskeleton, which is primarily made up of chitin fibres; they include the oyster, octopus, and snails.
Arthropoda. The members belonging to this phylum have their body covered with an exoskeleton, which is primarily made up of chitin fibres with jointed appendages. They include the crabs, lobster, and crayfish.
Chordata. The members of this phylum are the higher group with nerve bundles and spine that connects to the central nervous system. They include humans.
