On the flip side, DNA is duplicated in the S phase stage of interphase. During the S phase, which comes after the G_1 phase, all the chromosomes are replicated. Consequently, each chromosome then consists of two sister chromatids. Therefore, the amount of DNA in the cell becomes doubled up in the S phase of interphase.
