Explain how giving an alcoholic patient who has hypoglycemia an IV infusion of glucose alone can be fatal.
Rapid or excessive administration can induce hyperosmolar syndrome, and prolonged use can lead to hypokalemia (resulting in fatigue, muscle cramps, and abnormal heart rhythms). The IV infusion alone can be fatal in that it can lead to dehydration, impaired renal functions, and osmotic diuresis.
