zinc electrolyte solution has a composition of 65.4 g/L zinc(II), 24.3 g/L magnesium(II), and 98 g/L sulfuric acid. (Zn = 65.4, Mg = 24.3, H = 1, S = 32) (a) Use the solubility diagram of hydroxides at 25 oC to estimate the percentage of zinc that can be selectively precipitated as hydroxide by adjusting the pH value of the solution to 7. (b) The flow rate of the electrolyte having the above composition in the circuit is 0.8 m3 /h. Estimate the rate of addition of lime ((Ca(OH)2, t/h) to precipitate zinc ions at pH 7 (Hint: Consider the neutralisation of H2SO4 as well as the precipitation of Zn(OH)2 and write balanced chemical equations before commencing the calculation). (c) Predict with reasons what would happen if the precipitation was carried out at pH 8.
