A centrifugal clutch has four shoes shown in Figure 3, each of mass [m] 2kg which are held on retaining springs of stiffness [S] 10kN/m. The internal diameter of the clutch drum [D] is 600mm and the radius of the centre of gravity of the shoes when in contact with the drum [r 0 ] is 250mm. The stationary clearance [x] between the shoes and the drum is 20mm and the coefficient of friction [μ] is 0.25. Determine the performance of the rotating system due to the effects of centripetal acceleration by finding the following: (a) The rotational speed in revolutions per minute at which the clutch starts to engage; (b) The torque and the power transmitted at a speed [ω] of 1500 rpm.
