A 18 kN vertical load is supported by a horizontal beam and three vertical bars as shown in Figure 2. The beam is pinned to the bars allowing rotation without any friction. The central deflection of a simply supported beam of length L and flexural rigidity EI due a central point load P is given by PL3/(48 EI). Although not required to solve the problem, you can take the elastic modulus E for the material from which the bars and the beam is made as 210 GPa. The bars and the beam have the same length L = 1.5 m. The cross sectional area of the bars A = 60 mm2. Find the stress in each bar for the following cases: a. I = 103AL2 (the beam is very stiff) b. I = 10-9AL2 (the beam is very flexible) c. I = 0.01AL2 You need to include any freebody diagram(s), equation(s) of equilibrium, compatibility condition(s) and constitutive equation(s).
