A liquid absorbent (methanol) is used to remove CO2 gas from a methane stream on a continuous basis. The liquid is introduced at the top of an absorption column and trickles downwards through the ‘packing’ in the column. The gas stream is introduced at the bottom of the column and rises upwards coming into contact with the descending absorbent. The methane feed stream contains 30 wt.% CO2 and flows into the column at a rate of 100 kg/h. When it leaves the column, the CO2 content has been reduced to 1 wt.%. The concentration of CO2 in the methanol streams is 0.5 wt.% when it enters the column and 10 wt.% when it leaves. a) How much CO2 is removed in the scrubber? Hence, what is the CO2 removal efficiency of the scrubber?
