It is possible that the magnesium had a magnesium oxide coating. This would not react with acid the same way that the magnesium reacts. Watch the difference towards the end of the lab video. Keeping in mind that much of the HCl(aq) is water, go back to your reactions in LAD A2 and write a balanced equation to represent the reaction of magnesium oxide with water. What does the cloudiness of the solution when a small amount of the acid was added indicate about the solubility of the products of the reaction? Then think about the fact that acid does have H+ in it, and write a reaction to explain why the cloudiness went away when more acid was added.
