Rural sociology is the study of social organization and social processes that are characteristic of geographical localities where population size is relatively small and density is low (Warner 1974). Thus, rural sociology can be defined as the sociology of rural society.

Rural sociology has as its primary aim improving the well-being of the farm population. It originated as a recognized discipline in teaching and research less than 25 years ago as a part of the general impulse to improve agriculture technologically, economically, and socially.

It helps rural people to discover their needs and problems, and builds educational programs based on these needs and wants.
