Auguste Comte was a French philosopher who founded sociology and he believed in positivism, which is the idea that only scientific truth is the real truth. Comte didn’t consider things that cannot be scientifically validated, like religion and intuition, to be the ‘real truth.’ From the study of sociology and positivism Comte came up with three stages of social evolution that included; theological stage, the metaphysical stage, and the positive or scientific stage. Additionally the law of three stages states that; the society as a whole, and each particular science, develops through three mentally conceived stages: 1. The theological stage, 2. The metaphysical stage, 3. The positive stage.
