Realism is the notion that the world exists in a variety of objects, processes, qualities, and relationships, separate from the world of ideas and is self-dependent fully. Classical realism proposed by Aristotle suggests that matter (objects, processes, qualities, and relationships) does exist and that it is different from our insights. It may be impossible to see, hear, or feel it, but it still exists. Education enlightens a person with the ability to reason, which allows for appropriate choices.

Matter can invoke an understanding of an idea. The idea makes it clear that the primary question of classical realism is purpose. Aristotle realized free will among most people for they choose not to reason but he is supporting acquiring of knowledge. Realist educators encourage students to obtain their views on things from the world around them, rather than conforming to the world of their ideas. They are not likely to encourage their students to look for truth in literature and ideas, instead encourage them to test theories around them.
