Critically discuss whether the conflict theory or functionalist theoretical perspective on
health and illness is better suited to understanding the South African context.
In your discussion, compare and contrast the two perspectives and use examples from South Africa
during the current COVID-19 pandemic to support your argument.
Functionalist theory states that health determines the stability of the society; therefore, the number of sick people in a society is relative to the strength of an economy .Talcott Parson furthers argues that a sick person has not chosen to be sick and should not be a held responsible for their condition. The sick person should also be exempted from normal social roles and not required to fulfill the responsibility of a well person. However, this is temporary and relative to the degree of the sickness.
