The history of newspaper in SA and their impact on society
The Herald is one of South Africa's oldest publications, having been founded in 1845 as the Eastern Province Herald. Its initial issue, consisting of four pages, was published on May 7, 1845, and cost one cent. In the two and a half decades after apartheid ended, the South African media has played a significant political and social role. The South African media has contributed to a culture of democratic debate while also acting as a watchdog to hold political power accountable through investigative reporting into corruption and malfeasance, thanks to strong constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression and a vibrant civil society.
