ARIPO was founded in 1976 in Lusaka, Zambia, with the UNECA and the WIPO collaborating. A group of 15 founding countries came together to reach an agreement. In 1978, the ARIPO Agreement went into effect. ARIPO was originally only available to English-speaking African nations. Still, the membership conditions have subsequently been changed to include members of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa or the African Union. International organizations Several international conventions acknowledge ARIPO as a regional organization. Individual ARIPO member nations, on the other hand, are now members of different conventions and accords.
