Assess the functionalism and conflict theory critiques and assess these critiques and comment briefly on the applicability of these critiques to the South-African context
Conflict theorists would argue that they haven't, but rather have been used by the Walton family to solidify the patterns of stratification that keep the family rich. Functionalists criticize this approach by arguing that people do not always act largely out of economic self-interest.
Conflict theory has been criticized for its focus on change and neglect of social stability. Some critics acknowledge that societies are in a constant state of change, but point out that much of the change is minor or incremental, not revolutionary. Functionalism states that each aspect of a society serves a function and is necessary for the survival of that society. In the South African Context, both criticisms apply since the people are not acting largely out of economic self-interest but rather basic resources land. South Africa has concerns in regard to its social stability where there are established, social classes.
