Describe the different types of listening that the clinical sociologist would employ when interacting with the client.
Listening is a key component of effective communication skills. Without listening, you can’t understand what other people are really trying to say. It’s easy to get something wrong and make assumptions. A clinical sociologist would employ the following types of listening when interacting with the client;
a) Informational listening - Clinical sociologist is seeking to understand and retain information concerning the client so that he/she can know the type of prescription to issue.
b) Biased listening - Someone who uses biased listening will only listen for information that they specifically want to hear. The clinical sociologist will be seeking to gather the health information specifically and therefore will be biased.
c) Sympathetic listening - Clinical sociologist will be focusing on the message spoken through words, the listener focuses on the feelings and emotions of the client.
d) Critical listening - The clinical sociologist will not take the information at face value, he/shewill use critical listening to evaluate what’s being said by the client.
