Differentiation should be a constant best practice in classrooms, not an occasional event. The learner characteristics that create a need for it are constants and so should be the response to them. Differentiation refers to teachers' efforts to respond to differences among students in the classroom. Differentiating instruction occurs when a teacher reaches out to an individual or small group to vary his or her teaching in order to create the best learning experience possible.

At the elementary level, examples of differentiating processes or activities include the following:

  • Using tiered activities in which all learners work on the same important understandings and skills but with varying levels of support, challenge, or complexity;
  • establishing interest centers to encourage students to investigate subsets of the class topic that are of particular interest to them;
  • Creating personal agendas (task lists written by the teacher that include both in-common work for the entire class and work that addresses individual needs of learners) to be completed either during designated agenda time or as students complete other work early.
