Answer to Question #216666 in Sociology for Ziyanda Ngese

Question #216666

“Generally, conflict theory argues that there are inequalities amongst the dominant group and all the other groups in every society. These inequalities are evident when we look at the structures of wealth, power and status in a society. These are the same structures that maintain the social economic, political and coercive power of one group at the expense of the others.” (SoE 2018: 14) Briefly discuss in your own words what conflict theorists mean by “inequalities” and indicate how different aims and aspirations, statuses and opportunities give rise to these inequalities in society. Also provide an example to substantiate your argument. [10 marks]

Conflict theorists such as max weber view social inequalities as unequal distribution of resources in the society such as politics, power, employment, housing, food, education, employment, and wealth among others. Therefore the society is comprised of individuals with different social classes such as political power, level of education, wealth, and others which make them compete for scarce resources. However, the dormant group would work hard and use all means to maintain their social status at the expense of underprivileged people by blocking opportunities for their achievement including the formation of rules and laws that favor their social position in the society. For example, is the government that forms rules mandating the segregation of schools and other important public institutions based on the racial, gender, economic status and more
