4.2 (i) Social stratification refers to a process by which a society is divided into different layers, or strata, based on factors like level of education, occupation, income, and wealth. for example, grouping people who have bachelors degree together.
(ii) Ascribed characteristics refer to properties of an individual attained at birth, by inheritance, or through the aging process for example race, ethnicity, and gender.
iii) Achieved Characteristics refer to the ones acquired on the basis of merit; it is a position that is earned or chosen and reflects a person's skills, abilities, and efforts. for example an excellent accountant.
4.3 As a teacher, I should provide accurate historical context, encourage students to critically reflect on whose stories are celebrated in public memory, and brainstorm what would better represent the contributions and experiences of all members of the community. Secondly, the teacher should show the impacts of unintended harm arising from racial discrimination. Thirdly, I should encourage students to be brave in calling out racist behavior.
5.1 Teachers should promote gender-fair teaching practices by using gender-neutral language when appropriate, seat and group students intentionally to create familiarity of the two sexes, using project-based learning, and being reflective and objective in explaining the content of gender.
5.2 In South Africa, gender-fair teaching has been practiced in the following ways: using gender-neutral languages, teachers have been allowing students to seat mixed up both boys and girls, and using project-based learning approach where the teacher is intentional about integrating a mix of boys and girls within small group projects.
5.3 Social class refers to a group of people within a society who possess the same socioeconomic status.
5.4 Teachers belong to the low middle class where is mostly composed of low-status professional jobs. This is because teaching is generally poorly rated and lowly paid in civil service.
