2.1 In Greek, democracy comes from two words demos to mean people and Kratos to mean rule. In Greek, democracy refers to the act that citizens should be active in the government of their country and freely elect their representatives.
2.2 Firstly, the apartheid state in South Africa was segregative to people. Secondly, it was a system of racial discrimination which was based on their color, skin, caste, or religion. Thirdly, it led to a revolution.
2.3 In South Africa, studies have it that only 45% of learners believe that it is important for them to live in a country that is governed democratically. Learners should be taught to understand democracy because the future of the nation depends on the vigilance of its citizenry. Secondly, to instill the values of cooperation, fairness, and justice into the hearts of our students. Thirdly, learners need to understand democracy for the sake of nationalism building in students' mindset for the betterment of the country.
2.4 Citizenship education in South Africa involves several features such as; participation and empowerment of the young child, features of the national curriculum as well as the role of the teacher, and the social institutions that assume responsibility for the civic education of children: school, families and communities, and civil society.
