Explain why it is important that learners to understand the notion of democracy in the new South Africa (after apartheid).
The end of apartheid ushered in the era of democracy to South Africans but what should have been an eternal celebration has been cut short by the new generation. Research by the Cape Town University conducted in 2012 showed that only 60% of the new generation are in support of democracy, unlike the older generation. The research led to the introduction of civic education to the learners in South Africa so that they can understand the role played by democracy.
The notion of democracy creates a greater knowledge of politics through civic education and this creates a positive attitude towards democracy. By understanding the modality of democracy, learners can understand politics both theoretical and practical leading them to engage in discussions and debates on how governance is being run and how it should be in event of oppression and breach of human rights (Nicolson, 2016). Democracy promotes active citizenship and this creates a platform to engage in extra-curriculum activities that may entail democratic activities such as peaceful demonstration and this creates a room of recognition of freedom of speech and public gathering to air out views aimed at building a society that can freely associate with the government.
Understanding the notion of democracy may seem like a simple activity but its role is of greater value to the smooth running of a government and the society as a whole, South African learners of the new generation may seem not to be in support of the notion but its understanding is paramount. Understanding the notion of democracy creates a free environment to understand the role of the legislature while respecting human rights, this understanding creates freedom to air out views both in appreciation and opposing and by creating this freedom, discussions can be made open not only in schools but also in the whole country.
