Discuss the effect and causes of gender based violence
Gender Based Violence (GBV) is a human rights violation that can cause long-term and life- threatening injury and trauma. There are various factors that contribute to Gender Based Violence. These factors include, culture, poverty, alcoholism, and low income. More often than not, women are usually the victims of male perpetrators. The root cause of Gender Based Violence is due to the unequal power between men and women and is deeply rooted in discriminatory cultural beleifs, attitudes, and practices that encourage gender inequality and powerlessness among women. Studies shows that cultures that support male dorminance over women contribute and enhance violence and discrimination against women. Also when women lack adequate education and empowerment, they become victims of violence. Alcoholism is often associated with violent crimes against women. Another great contributor of violence is poverty and low income. Thus abused women find it hard to escape from their abusers as they have nowhere to go. There are many adverse effects of GBV. Gender Based Violence threatens the family structure: families break up due to the violence and children suffer emotional damage. Violence affects the victims mentally and psychologically: victims of abuse often struggle with healthy and rewarding relationships in the future. They also suffer from depression and anxiety. Moreover, children who grow up witnessing violence, may see it as a normal alternative to resolving conflicts in the future. This reproduces a cycle of abuse that is difficult to root out.
