Question #114892

how is the concept "identity" explained by the following theorists: 1.a functionalist 2. a conflict theorist 3. a symbolic interactionist

Expert's answer

Functionalist view identity as a mental state that is determined by its causal relations to sensory stimulations, behaviour and other mental conditions. Conflict theorists view identity as an aspect that is related to self-awareness and self-consciousness which lead to cultural norms and group identities. On the other hand, symbolic interactionists perceive identity as the human interactions with things based on their meanings ascribed to them which is created through continuous interaction with others in the society.
