IDENTIFY THE CORE ASSUMPTIONS OF BEHAVIORAL AND
SOCIAL LEARNING THEORIES OF PERSONALITY.
The key assumptions of the behavioral approach are one we are born as a blank slate and we learn everything from the environment. This assumption believes that all humans, male and female, are born the same and it is the environment and social norms that shape our personality. The second assumption of the behavioral approach is that we learn through conditioning. There are two main types of conditioning which are classical conditioning and operant conditioning. Classical conditioning refers to learning through association while Operant conditioning refers to learning through reinforcement.
Social learning theory states that learning is a cognitive process that takes place in a social context and can occur purely through observation or direct instruction, even in the absence of motor reproduction or direct reinforcement. In addition to the observation of behavior, learning also occurs through the observation of rewards and punishments, a process known as vicarious reinforcement.
The following are core assumptions of social learning theory of personality; People can learn by observing other's behaviors and the consequences that result, Learning can occur without a change in behavior, Cognition plays important roles in learning, People can have considerable control over their actions and environments and Self-regulation plays a major role in learning, for example, goals, self-observation, self-judgment, self-reaction.
