Describe the dimensions the DSM uses to classify mental disorders
DSM proposed two-dimensional models to classify mental disorders; these are:
Criterion A: level of personality functioning
The criterion is divided into four different elements, that is: identity- representing awareness of oneself; self-direction- individual’s internal ability to attain reasonable expectations; empathy- ability to consider and understand other’s experience; intimacy- ability to maintain meaningful, caring, and reciprocal relations
Criterion B: pathological personality traits
In this dimension, pathological personality features are classified into five different domains, detachment, negative affectivity, disinhibition, antagonism, and psychoticism
