Analyze a health-related behavior that is considered unhealthy (smoking, unhealthy eating, drinking too much, not getting enough sleep, not exercising, avoiding health screenings, etc.). Based on your readings, describe and analyze how health beliefs are related to this behavior using at least one of the models in the textbook. Examples: Stages of Change Model, Health Belief Model (HBM) or Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Analyze and discuss the psychosocial (emotional, social, financial) influences on health-related behavior that you observe.
Smoking cigarettes and secondhand smoke are major causes of death from major chronic illnesses such as heart disease, respiratory illness, and cancer. Additionally, scholars have cited lack of sleep and insomnia, which are described as a behavior that results from smoking affecting the majority of smokers. Health Behavior Model states that tobacco use is determined by the perspective of the smokers regarding the diseases, serious effects of the tobacco among other side effects. On the other hand, cigarette smoking is recognized to be associated with intrapersonal discomfort and mental problems. Cigarette smokers, for instance, have greater levels of depression than the overall population, and negative emotions are linked to tobacco.
