Postmodernism is a method of defining how civilization has developed to the postmodern era. Therefore, when it comes to religion, society is more likely to encounter a "pick and mix" culture, in which people choose the religion that best suits their lifestyle and preferences. It appears that postmodernism's essence is to resist any formal characterization of theses that would prescribe a clear, aggressive attitude. If there is one thing that can be said about postmodernism, it is that it symbolizes a specific kind of critical attitude, most commonly defined in terms of what it is not. It has been defined as a denial of metanarratives, a reaction against enlightenment principles and reason, a bold affirmation of difference and non-normativity, or an extreme kind of antirealism or social constructivism. These aren't merely negative or critical views of certain traditional philosophical propositions; they also cast doubt on the possibility of constructing a cohesive, comprehensive alternative theoretical approach on a more fundamental level.
