Reciprocal determinism shows how a person's behavior is influenced through cognitive processes and environmental factors such as social stimuli. The expression of genes in an organism can be influenced by the environment, including the external world in which the organism is located or develops and the organism's internal world, which includes such factors as its hormones and metabolism. Genes, via their influences on morphology and physiology, create a framework within which the environment acts to shape an individual's behavior. The environment can affect morphological and physiological development; in turn, behavior develops due to that animal's shape and internal workings. Internal and external environmental factors, like gender and temperature, influence gene expression. Similarly, drugs, chemicals, temperature, and light are among the external environmental factors that can determine which genes are turned on and off, thereby influencing the way an organism develops and functions.
