Questions to consider after identification of top 2 Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Modes:
• What are our top two Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode results? Explain these in your own words.
• Do you agree with these results? To support your answer, provide two examples of when you have demonstrated these conflict modes in action either at work or in inter-personal relationships.
• If you disagree, provide two examples of the conflict mode(s) you believe you actually use in conflict situations.
• State which other mode of conflict mode you would like to develop, and how you would go about developing it.
Conflict and challenge-The word ‘conflict’ has a natural negative association of battling, shouting, blaming and arguing. This makes conflict seem like something to be avoided at all costs.According to the Thomas Kilmann model we each have a natural approach to managing conflict. I immediately connected this to challenging coaching and how we each feel about challenging our coachees.
I agree with the results. The Thomas Kilmann model model identifies two dimensions when choosing a course of action in a conflict situation, these are assertiveness and cooperativeness. Assertiveness is the degree to which you try to satisfy your own needs. Cooperativeness is the degree to which you try to satisfy the other person’s concerns.
In such conflict situations, we can describe an individual’s behavior along two dimensions: assertiveness, the extent to which the person attempts to satisfy his own concerns, and cooperativeness, the extent to which the person attempts to satisfy the other person’s concerns.
