Democracy is a system of governance where the people can rule directly or indirectly through representatives for instance the U.S is a democratic nation. Ancient democracy defines a model of leadership where citizens take an active role in the governance of the country directly or through representatives. Alternatively, the modern concept of democracy consists of four key elements a political system for choosing and adjusting the form of governance through free and fair elections, the active participation of citizens in politics and civic life, preservation of human rights and the rule of law where regulations and procedures are applied equally to all.
