3-sigma rule can be used in this process. According to that rule, only about 2.1% of some values will lie outside of ±3σ interval with regard to the mean value. For instance, a software system was tested many times to measure how much time it can run without errors or interruptions. We have a set of data. We can calculate the mean and the standard deviation. Then we can be confident that 95.45% of runtime values lie within ±3σ interval. This data can be used to see whether the software complies with the requirements or not. However, the task can require other value of the required confidence level like σ or 2σ.
