The composition of the 2020 electorate was determined by a number of factors, which explains why Biden won. Those who voted for Clinton and Trump in 2016 turned out in similar numbers in 2020 – approximately nine out of ten – and the clear majority remained loyal to the same party in the presidential election. Both Biden and Trump have large bases of support among these voters. Between 2016 and 2020, there were changes in presidential candidate support among some major categories, particularly suburban voters and independents. Overall, these changes benefited Biden more than Trump.
